Ok, hear me out with this one. This is not some overboard millennial fashionista eyeroll idea – it’s really a way to be smarter with the number of clothes your tiny human needs and will wear. Because I’m sure you’ve heard – they grow so very quickly, blasting through sizes and before you know it you’re handing things over to friends or folding away “maybe for the next one”.
You’re probably also aware how often these little dumplings demand an outfit change – leaking nappies, blowout nappies, spit-ups, full projectile vomits, food “painting” and all sorts of other impressive ways to ruin a look. So I really feel the best thing you can do (for your budget, wardrobe space, the environment and your general sanity) is construct a wonderful little mix and match wardrobe for your darling critter. This way, if you just need to change their bottoms you don’t also have to change their top etc etc. You don’t have to panic that washing hasn’t been done yet – everything works, with everything. Here’s how:
- Pick a colour palette. Admittedly, I may have gone a bit hard on the #sageandmustardeverything and I’m fairly sure my best friend is waiting to be able to travel again just so she can come here and stage an intervention. But the whole concept behind a capsule wardrobe is any combination of your clothes work together so the first step is picking colours you love that also love each other.
- Don’t buy too many patterns. Learnt this one the hard way – love a kiddies pattern and I’m thoroughly here for them! But make sure you have enough less busy prints to go with the crazy. Sawyer has the cutest Where The Wild Things Are leggings but they need a solid number on top. Particularly with jerseys / jumpers I’ve realised (obviously) the ones we get the most out of are the more plain ones that go with most of our wardrobe.
- Consider Pre-Loved for special occasion outfits. I love a good holiday. I love a good reason to dress-up. And particularly with Christmas and Chinese / Lunar New Year, Sawyer had a few fun outfits and a lot more red to wear. The red doesn’t really go with that much of his general wardrobe but it was festive and wonderful for the time of year – let’s never be so strict about these things that we take all the fun out of it! I bought most of these holiday spirit filled outfits from Hong Kong based pre-loved specialist star Retykle. He’s only worn a lot of these items a few times so I’ll now be able to send them back to Retykle for re-sell to the next family looking for some holiday wardrobe vibes.
